The Most Important Technology of Our Lifetime
When the internet arrived, plenty of businesses decided they didn’t need a website. We’re at that moment again, with far more at stake.
This is not another tool
Every tool we have ever built has depended on a person. The plow, the printing press, the computer, the internet. Each one made us stronger, faster or better informed. None of them could do the work on its own.
AI can. It reads, writes, reasons and acts.
For the first time in history, the tool does the work. And today is the weakest it will ever be.
Every business will run on AI
Twenty years ago, every company became a technology company, whether it sold software or sandwiches. Owners didn’t all choose to. Their customers, suppliers and competitors moved online, and running a business without email, a website and digital payments stopped being possible.
The same thing is happening now, only faster. Every business will have AI working alongside its people: the law firm, the accounting practice, the brokerage, the clinic, the online store. Every single one.
For a small business, this is the biggest opportunity in a generation. For most of history, what a business could do was limited by how many people it could afford to hire. More clients meant more staff, and expertise meant expensive people. That limit is gone. A five-person firm can now operate with the capacity of a firm many times its size. It can answer every inquiry within minutes, turn work around in hours instead of weeks, and offer services it could never have staffed before.
We won’t pretend this leaves every job as it is. Many roles will change completely, and some will disappear. AI will also do things no role ever could, like reading every document your firm has ever produced before your morning meeting. The businesses that do well will be the ones that decide deliberately what their people should spend their time on, and let AI take the rest.
From trying it to running on it
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already used AI. Maybe you’ve asked ChatGPT to clean up an email, or dropped in a long document to get a summary. You’ve seen that it’s good. You may also have noticed that, a few months later, your business runs exactly the way it did before.
That’s where most businesses are today. They’ve tried AI, but they haven’t built it in.
The next decade will be decided in the gap between the two. A chat window you open when you remember to is useful. A business where AI is part of the daily work, from intake and research to documents, follow-up and reporting, is a different kind of business. It serves more customers with the same team, makes fewer mistakes, and spends its people’s time on the parts of the work that need a person.
Why we started Foresight Labs
We started Foresight Labs to help businesses make this change well, and early.
We named the company Foresight because the hardest part of a change like this isn’t the technology. It’s seeing what’s coming clearly enough to act before you’re forced to.
We believe AI should be judged by what it does for a business, not by how impressive it sounds. We believe it should make the people in a business more capable, not leave them behind. And we believe businesses that handle sensitive information deserve AI they can trust, on terms they control.
We are optimistic about what’s coming. The businesses that act now won’t just keep up. They’ll serve their customers better than they ever could, grow without the old limits, and give their people better work to do. That future is open to any business willing to start.
This is the most important technology of our lifetime. What we build with it is up to us.
